MIFFLINBURG -- A misfiring gun used against a Union County resident as his home was burglarized Thursday was stolen from his house by a man involved in a previous break-in, state police at Milton said Friday.
Robert Schreffler Jr., 22, of 1064 Vine St., Williamsport, was arraigned Thursday before District Judge Jeffrey L. Mensch in Mifflinburg on charges of attempted murder, criminal conspiracy and aggravated assault. He is being held in Union County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Three other people involved in Thursday's burglary at the home of Carson Sampsell, 20, of Linsey Lane, West Buffalo Township, are at large, police said.
"We have leads on the other three," state police trooper Philip Davis said Friday.
The four people who entered Sampsell's home at 3:30 a.m. by unlocking a screen door through a dog door were looking for drugs and money, police said.
Schreffler told police that he saw Sampsell's vehicle parked in front of the house, that he knew Sampsell's father was at work and that he thought Sampsell might not be home.
After Sampsell's locked bedroom door was kicked in, Schreffler and two of the burglars struck him in the face and head up to 11 times, one of them using a pistol, police said.
Sampsell fought off one attacker and reached in his bed for a firearm, police said. Schreffler stood by as an accomplice pointed a gun at Sampsell and pulled the trigger, though the weapon did not fire.
Schreffler and Samspell attended college together, police said.
Two guns stolen from Sampsell's residence in the previous burglary were recovered, police said.
Schreffler, who police say admitted to all violations, faces a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. June 3 before Mensch.
