Driver injured when streetsweeper overturns in Middleburg

MIDDLEBURG — A borough councilman was injured when he lost control of a streetsweeper coming down a hill in Middleburg and the vehicle overturned this morning, police said.

Middleburg Police Chief Tony Jordan said Tom Hackenberg, 64, of Middleburg, was assisting borough workers with streetsweeping just after 11 a.m. when he was driving an Elgin Pelican streetsweeper down Pine Street in the borough. As the vehicle came down a hill, Mr. Hackenberg realized that the vehicle was out-of-control and tried to turn into an alley rather than having it run into the intersection with the heavily-trafficked Route 104. As he tried to turn into the alley, the streetsweeper rolled over.

Mr. Hackenberg was taken to Geisinger Medical Center with what police described as moderate injuries.
