SELINSGROVE — Two borough residents have been charged with stealing a global positioning system unit from a vehicle parked at Walmart last month, but Snyder County District Attorney Michael Piecuch said Friday police have not linked the crime with a spate of vehicle break-ins in Selinsgrove.
Wayne Inch, 66, of Middleburg, notified store officials that a Garmin GPS unit was removed from his vehicle parked in the Monroe Township lot July 16, state police at Selinsgrove said.
A store surveillance camera captured two men walking toward a tan minivan. One walked toward Inch’s Saturn, which was parked in the next stall, reached into the vehicle and removed an object from the center console, court records said.
Using information from security cameras, police determined the vehicle had been serviced at Walmart and was registered to Rene Riveria Ortiz, 23, of 1 18th St.
Police went to the address and found Ortiz and Christian Ricardo Vidal-Romero, 25, of 401 S. High St., identified as the men who removed the object from Inch’s car.
Both men gave police permission to search the vehicle, police said. A GPS with Inch’s address programmed into it was found under the front passenger seat.
Ortiz and Vidal-Romero are charged with receiving stolen property, theft from a motor vehicle and criminal conspiracy.
Piecuch said Friday he was not aware of a connection between the theft of Inch’s GPS unit and a rash of thefts in the past month, and as recently as Monday, in Selinsgrove.
Police are investigating thefts of 20 items, including GPS units, an Ipod and a sewing machine.
