LEWISBURG —
St. Patrick’s Day is Sunday, Bucknell Bison are in March Madness ... it’s likely there’ll be a lot of parties this weekend. Union County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Hahn, DUI enforcement coordinator chief, urges motorists to be safe and don’t drive after drinking.
Law enforcement officials in Snyder and Union counties will be on high alert, Hahn said, cracking down on drunken drivers as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” public safety campaign.
“Drunk driving is dangerous, deadly and against the law — and it will not be tolerated in Snyder and Union counties this St. Patrick’s Day,” Hahn said. “We are giving fair warning to everyone traveling through Snyder and Union counties that our law enforcement officers will be out on patrol and if you are caught driving drunk, you will be arrested.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 700 people were killed nationwide in crashes involving drunk drivers during St. Patrick’s Day holidays from 2006 to 2010.
On average, every 51 minutes a person is killed in a drunken-driving crash in the United States. Most of these crashes involve drivers who have blood alcohol concentrations of 0.15 grams per deciliter or higher — almost twice the legal limit of 0.08 g/dL in Pennsylvania.
Hahn recommends following these steps to stay safe this weekend and anytime alcohol is part of one’s weekend plans:
Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.
If you’re impaired, use a taxi or call a sober friend or family member to pick you up.
If you see a drunken driver on the road, contact local police.
If you know someone is about to drive a vehicle while impaired, take the keys and help that person make other arrangements to get to where he or she is going safely.
