MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS — A burglar stole $11.50 in change, two bags of chicken and a bag of cauliflower from a small Snyder County cafe Monday night or Tuesday morning.
It was one of two break-ins that occurred overnight within a few miles of each other in Snyder County.
Cruiser’s Cafe owner Joel Snyder said he got a call at 8:38 a.m. Tuesday from one of his cooks, who had arrived early to prepare barbecue. She noticed the freezer door and bathroom doors were wide open, and the cash register was gone.
“I honestly don’t know how they got in,” Snyder said, “whether or not they picked the lock. Everything was locked when she got there in the morning.”
No damage was done, he said.
Thankfully, the cash register never contains more than just change when the cafe is closed, and the freezer is small.
“They didn’t get a lot of food,” Snyder said.
The hamburgers and bison burgers were untouched, he said.
A burglary occurred there about eight years ago, when Snyder first opened the cafe.
“That time, the door was wide open,” he said, adding that he believes it was someone familiar with the business because hidden money was stolen.
“They had to know where the key was,” he said.
At about 2 a.m. Tuesday, suspects wearing gray hooded sweat shirts, one with a tribal or Chinese design on the upper chest area, broke into the side entrance of the Original Italian Pizza along Route 35 in Richfield and took a change box from under the counter. The box contained about $500. The suspects also stole 20 to 30 gift cards.
Anyone with information is asked to call state police at Selinsgrove at 374-8145. For information regarding the Cruiser’s Cafe burglary, call trooper Nathan Wenzel and refer to incident number F07-1091675.
