Record amount raised for needy


SUNBURY — A record $123,240 has been collected in the 2009 Needy Family Fund.

Recent donations have pushed the total over last year’s previous high by $1,000.

The Degenstein Foundation donated $25,000 after its challenge to contributors to reach the $75,000 goal was met.

The fund, which began in 1987, benefits the less fortunate in the Valley. It is sponsored by The Daily Item, Sunbury Broadcasting Corp. and Susquehanna Bank, with food, clothing and gifts distributed by Salvation Army citadels in Sunbury and Milton.
