Family displaced by blaze in Shamokin

By Diane Petryk

SHAMOKIN — A woman and at least two children were forced to move in with relatives Sunday night when a fire swept through their home and another dwelling at 100 and 102 N. Vine St.

No one was injured, and the cause of the 7:15 blaze is under investigation, said Shamokin Fire Bureau Chief Jim Catino.

The second home was vacant, and the owner of both is a man in Pakistan, Catino said.

He was contacted there for power of attorney to allow boarding up of the buildings, Catino said.

It is likely both will be total losses, he added.

Firefighters from Coal Township, Overlook, Mount Carmel and Kulpmont assisted Shamokin’s crew.

Water used to fight the fire froze on the street, complicating logistics of the firefight, Catino said.
