SELINSGROVE -- A borough man who allegedly stabbed a Lancaster County resident and threatened to kill his former girlfriend held police from five different stations and a regional SWAT team at bay before surrendering Friday night.
Edwin Estien Jr., 27, of 7 W. Snyder St., faces felony assault charges after using a kitchen knife to cut a Mountville man in the right leg, Selinsgrove police report.
Police said it was just before 10 p.m. Friday when they were called to an apartment at 20 E. Bough St. by a 25-year-old Selinsgrove woman, Estien's former girlfriend, and her 29-year-old male friend.
The two were identified only as victims and were not identified by name for "investigative purposes," police said.
The two told police Estien forced his way into the apartment and, upon seeing her with another man, a dispute arose, during which Estien is accused of grabbing a knife from the apartment's kitchen and stabbing the man. He was taken to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for treatment.
Estien fled the apartment, police said, but not before vowing to return with a gun to kill his former girlfriend.
Selinsgrove police immediately began searching for Estien and were assisted by police from Shamokin Dam and Middleburg and from state troopers from the Selinsgrove and Stonington barracks.
Twenty minutes after police were first called, a police officer stationed near Estien's second-floor West Snyder Street apartment saw him enter the apartment, but Estien never turned on any lights inside the apartment.
Police immediately surrounded the apartment building, shutting down access to West Snyder Street between Market and North High Streets and segments of Strawberry Alley.
The Susquehanna Valley Special Emergency Response Team, a regional SWAT team, also was called in to assist, and by midnight finally made contact with Estien via cell phone. He surrendered to police a short time later.
Estien has been charged with felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary, and misdemeanor counts of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and terroristic threats,
He was arraigned in front of on-call District Judge Leo Armbruster and remains in the Snyder County prison on $100,000 bail awaiting a preliminary hearing.
According to online court records, Estien has a history of assault charges in Snyder County dating to 2006. Those charges were later withdrawn.
