Basement blaze put out

By Rick Dandes

PENNS CREEK — A fire that started with sparks from either a furnace or wood stove in the basement of a farm house at 1260 Middle Road Friday evening, was extinguished within an hour by area fire personnel.

Penns Creek Fire Department Fire Chief Todd Sprenkel said he was called out shortly after 5:30 p.m. “You could see flames in the basement of the house when we arrived,” he said.

The flames shot into the walls of the house, but by 6:30 p.m., the fire was under control.

Sprenkel said he could not yet estimate the extent and cost of the damage to the home, owned by Paul Kuhns.

Assisting at the scene were fire and rescue personnel from Middleburg and Beavertown.
