DANVILLE -- A 79-year-old Shamokin woman died at 2 a.m. Monday at Geisinger Medical Center from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident Sunday morning.
Margery F. (Mertz) Stamets, of 260 Mountain Road, was driving a 2004 Subaru Legacy south on Route 61 at the Brewery Curve at 8:45 a.m. when her car slid on the icy road, according to Coal Township police. They said her car crossed the median. It was hit on the passenger side by a 2005 GMC driven by Carolyn Willis, 64, of Elysburg.
Police said Willis was traveling north.
Both drivers were taken to Shamokin Area Community Hospital. Willis was treated for her injuries and later released. Stamets was transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Stamets was born in Northumberland on Jan. 28, 1930, a daughter of the late Byron M. Mertz Sr. and Laura M. (Dailey) Mertz. She lived most of her life in Shamokin.
A graduate of Coal Township High School, she retired as the secretary of Danville Sales & Services Inc., of Point Township.
