WATSONTOWN — Back injuries Glenda Heimbach suffered in a car accident one year ago have turned her family’s financial situation upside down.
Heimbach, 30, was on her way to Selinsgrove Center, where she worked as a residential service aide, on Nov. 9, 2008, when her vehicle was rear-ended by a van.
She suffered a back injury and has not been able to return to work.
At the time of the accident, Heimbach was supporting a 6-week-old daughter and living with her mother, Tina Heimbach, in Watsontown.
“My daughter said, ‘Mom, one day you’re on your way to work and everything’s fine, and the next day you can’t do anything,” said Tina Heimbach, 51. “People take life for granted.”
The family applied to the Needy Family Fund for the first time last year, just after the accident.
A year later, their needs persist.
Tina Heimbach has been on disability for many years because of heart problems and said the loss of her daughter’s income is difficult to bear.
“We used to have money for the things we needed, but $720 for three people doesn’t go far,” she said.
Heimbach said with the aid of the holiday fund drive sponsored by The Daily Item, Sunbury Broadcasting Corp. and Susquehanna Bank, in cooperation with the Salvation Army of Milton and Sunbury, she’ll be able to provide Christmas gifts to her 14-month-old granddaughter.
Recent donations were as follows: Richard F. Walter, in memory of Grace Raker, Selinsgrove, $25; John F. Klopf, Lewisburg, $75; anonymous donations: $100.
The fund currently totals $2,100.
