Coat, clothes collection under way

By Karen Blackledge

DANVILLE — Montour County will again be sponsoring a coat collection for the less fortunate but is expanding it to include more items.

Also accepted will be hats, gloves, blankets, new and used clothing and kids’ clothes, county Commissioner Jack Gerst said.

Items may be deposited in boxes at the courthouse on Mill Street, the transit building on Woodbine Avenue, Metso Minerals on Railroad Street and Danville High School.

“Last year, we probably collected one ton’s worth of coats,” Gerst said. The coats were delivered by transit vans to the Good Samaritan Mission on Ferry Street.

People bringing items to the courthouse may call ahead, and someone will pick them up at the curb.

The county will deliver the articles to the mission between 10 and noon Dec. 17.

“The people who received them last year very much appreciated them,” Gerst said.

In other business at a recent meeting, the commissioners reappointed William Hartman to the conservation district board, appointed Valerie Mazol to serve the unexpired term of Fred Shepperson on the county housing authority and reappointed J. Harry Chapman, John Houston and Suzann Pharr to the planning commission.

The commissioners are seeking a county resident to serve on the Habitat for Humanity board. Interested people may call the commissioners’ office at 271-3000.
