Individuals who served in any branch of the military who had their enlistments involuntarily extended may receive special payments, U.S. Rep. Chris Carney announced on Oct. 22.
Payments of $500 for every month they were held under stop-loss orders were included on the 2009 War Supplemental Appropriations Act.
The payments are available to service members from every branch who had their enlistments extended or retirement suspended due to Stop Loss between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009. They may begin submitting their claims for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Payments immediately, and all applications must be submitted by Oct. 21, 2010. Service members must provide documented proof they were Stop-lossed with their claim.
Joan Nissley, a spokesman for the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, said National Guard units may be eligible for payments if they meet the criteria, but all claims are being handled through regular military channels.
