SUNBURY — A 19-year-old city man was sent to the Northumberland County Prison in lieu of $60,000 bail for allegedly breaking another man’s jaw last week.
Michael Anthony Newman, of 131 State St., was arraigned on felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple assault and harassment charges by District Judge Robert J. Bolton for allegedly punching Christopher Tallon and breaking his jaw Oct. 13.
Tallon, whose age and address were not available, told Sunbury police that he had argued with Newman’s brother earlier and then was confronted by Newman.
The pair parted, and, later that day, Tallon said he recognized Newman’s mother, Jamie Godley, driving a vehicle, court records said. He then saw Newman get out of the vehicle, approach him and punch him in the face, police said. The blow knocked Tallon to the ground, court records said.
The next morning, he wasn’t able to open his mouth, and a visit to Sunbury Community Hospital confirmed his jaw was broken and surgery was required, officers said.
Police said they interviewed Newman, who admitted hitting Tallon, but didn’t think the punch was hard enough to break his jaw.
