MANDATA — Teachers and administrators should be allowed to carry firearms on school property, a Line Mountain school board member suggested Tuesday night.
The subject surfaced during a discussion led by Superintendent David Campbell about reviews he and his staff have had regarding safety plans in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
Director Lauren Hackenburg made the motion.
“I would like to grant permission to district administration to designate a key person or people who are trained in firearm safety to be granted permission to carry and-or have access to firearm(s), which may or may not be kept at a designated safe place within the school(s),” she said Wednesday night in a statement emailed to The Daily Item. “It is my understanding that local school boards have the right, and in the times we face I feel obligation, to pass such a resolution to take another step in assuring the safety of our children should a shooter get into the building.”
