So far there has been more than 200 residents which have taken the Shikellamy School District’s poll on whether or not the fieldhouse should be named after legendary wrestling coach Phil Lockcuff, who died in January.
“It’s been a huge response,” district Superintendent Pat Kelley said.
“We are taking every comment and vote and reviewing everything.”
The Resilite Wrestling Club, of Sunbury, recommended renaming the Shikellamy Fieldhouse to the “Lockcuff Fieldhouse,” and Kelley opened up a link on www.shikbraves.org. for people to cast votes.
So did The Daily Item on www.dailyitem.com.
The Daily Item poll shows a more than 2-1 vote in favor of renaming the fieldhouse and Kelley said the district is seeing the same results.
“We wanted to get the public involved in this decision,” he said.
“Phil Lockcuff was an important part of this area and we wanted everyone to have a say.”
Lockcuff, who led the Braves to three state titles during his Hall of Fame career, died January 25.
He was 75.
Lockcuff coached at Shikellamy for 24 years, leading the Braves to the PIAA Class AAA title in 1984, 1985 and again 1991. He coached a dozen PIAA individual champions as well and finished his career with a record of 346-71-6.
“I want to thank the residents and Pat Kelley for doing this,” Resilite Wrestling Club president Tom Krieger said.
“This is an overwhelming amount of support for only the first day it has been posted.”
Kelley said the link would be active for several weeks and then a vote count and the comment section would be brought to the school board.
“People respected and liked Phil Lockcuff,” Kelley said.
“I think people are talking about this and they are definitely visiting the website to cast their vote and thoughts.”
