CHAMBERSBURG (AP) — U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster is trying to become the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, a position once held by his father.
Shuster sent a letter to fellow Republicans after last week’s election saying he has demonstrated leadership and achieved a strong record of accomplishments in his 11 years on the committee.
Shuster’s father, Bud, chaired the committee from 1995 to 2001.
Florida Rep. John Mica is barred from another term as chairman by House Republican rules. No Pennsylvania House member chairs a full committee.
The 52-year-old Shuster won election to a seventh term representing Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District, which will cover all or parts of 11 counties in south-central and southwestern Pennsylvania.
He currently chairs the subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
