ORLANDO, Fla. — The Milton Area High competitive cheerleading squad on Saturday scored 84.4 points before a crowd of 1,000 and became one of five teams to advance and battle for today’s Universal Cheerleaders Association national title.
Milton finished fifth after Saturday’s 2½-minute routine and trails leader Fort Walton Beach, Fla., the defending national champion that on Saturday tallied 93 points of the possible 100.
“This is seriously overwhelming,” said Danielle Yoder, one of 11 seniors on the Milton squad. “I never thought that personally I would ever be here, being from such a small town in Central Pennsylvania.
“You just don’t think you will ever be one of those teams. You see the nationals on ESPN and never think of going there. It took me a while to actually believe we made it to finals.”
Milton, the champion in the first District 4 competitive cheerleading tournament held in November, finished eighth in the PIAA tournament last weekend in Hershey.
The 21 girls on the squad will be the fourth of five national teams to compete today, at 3:50 p.m.
