SELINSGROVE — Twenty-five years after serving as the setting for the world’s longest banana split, the borough is trying to remain top banana in Guinness World Records by playing host this May to an event aimed at creating a record-breaking 5-mile ice cream treat.
Organizer Chris Schlieder, a 38-year-old Selinsgrove resident who vaguely recalls the hoopla surrounding the building of the 4.55-mile banana split on April 30, 1988, in downtown Selinsgrove, is spearheading the effort.
The 1988 event still holds the Guinness World Record for longest banana split. It beat the 1982 record of 8,007 feet, also set in downtown Selinsgrove that also raised $10,420 for the Selinsgrove Area High School band.
Schlieder wants to crush the 1988 feat.
