SHAMOKIN DAM — A Selinsgrove man wanted on a parole violation eluded at least eight law enforcement agencies on Thursday afternoon and was caught after asking a shopper for a ride inside a Valley department store.
While investigating an incident near the Econo Lodge along Routes 11-15 in Shamokin Dam, borough police learned that Christopher A. Biddinger, 25, of Selinsgrove — wanted on an unspecified parole violation by state police and the Northumberland County Sheriff’s Department — was nearby.
Following on that information, officers approached Biddinger in his motel room, Shamokin Dam police Chief Timothy Bremigen said.
At 1:27 p.m., “(Biddinger) ran out the door and into the woods” behind the Econo Lodge, Bremigen said.
Police informed Valley news agencies of the chase.
A perimeter was established, with the assistance of K-9 units from the Union County Sheriff’s Department and Sunbury police, Northumberland County Sheriff’s Department, state police at Selinsgrove, officers from the Selinsgrove and Buffalo Valley Regional departments, and the state Game Commission.
It was believed Biddinger was armed with a knife, so to ensure the safety of the public, Bremigen said, precautionary measures were taken.
A police search helicopter was on standby.
Officers fanned out along Routes 11-15, stomping through deep thickets of underbrush looking for Biddinger.
A female shopper inside Kmart who had received a text message about the chase from a Valley news outlet saw police enter the store. That’s when Biddinger approached her and asked for a ride, Bremigen said.
The woman declined.
Moments later, Biddinger was nabbed, ending the 58-minute chase.
“We used his cell phone use to hone in on his location” near Kmart, Bremigen said.
Asked whether Biddinger resisted arrest, Bremigen said, “He didn’t have a chance to.”
Biddinger has a record that includes time spent in jail for simple assault in 2008 to criminal trespass and making terroristic threats in 2009.
