DANVILLE —
Howard Huntington didn’t get to see the smiles Saturday as visitors to the Jubilee Kitchen unwrapped gifts on the final weekend before Christmas.
Yet without Huntington, the Jubilee Kitchen may not have fed or entertained 53 people on Saturday.
“He never got to see his idea come to fruition,” Jubilee director Linda Pritchard said. “It’s sad.”
Huntington, while ill, presented the idea of a soup kitchen to fellow Danville Food Bank board member Sandy O’Rourke. It was O’Rourke who told the Danville Riverside Area Ministerial Association about Huntington’s idea in the fall of 1992.
“They had meetings with churches in the area,” Pritchard said. “They worked on this project ... the next November, they had the first soup kitchen.”
By then, Huntington had died.
But his idea lives on — every Saturday of every year since November 1993.
“It’s giving people who are down and out, who don’t have much money, who are unemployed, a hot meal,” said 17-year volunteer Pam Stetler, who with other women in the insurance industry donated $500 toward the purchase of gifts to be distributed to Saturday’s visitors.
