SELINSGROVE —
A Middleburg man linked to several church burglaries is in more legal trouble after he allegedly assaulted another inmate inside Snyder County jail last month.
John James Shaffer II, 18, was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail for allegedly breaking into six Snyder County churches and stealing cash and items beginning in April before being apprehended in Florida in late August.
On Nov. 12, Shaffer allegedly punched fellow inmate Dwayne Andrew McCarty so severely in the face that he needed treatment for an eye injury, concussion and sinus fracture, state police at Selinsgrove said.
McCarty claims the dispute began when he admittedly broke jail rules and tried to get a second lunch but was told on by Shaffer, who was serving lunch trays that day. McCarty said he called Shaffer a “snitch” and Shaffer came after him in his cell a few hours later.
Shaffer was arraigned Monday before District Judge John H. Reed on charges of felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault and harassment and returned to jail in lieu of $35,000 cash bail.
