MILTON —
Unemployment benefits have supported Danita Robinson’s family for seven months, but she’s looking forward to being able to get back to work again soon.
“There have been a few opportunities, but I don’t have a vehicle,” said the single mother of two.
Robinson said she’s hoping to be able to collect unemployment compensation until early next year when she expects a tax refund will be adequate for a down payment on a car.
“I hope to make it until then. I don’t have a choice,” she said.
In the meantime, Robinson said she’s grateful for the generosity of the community and the offer of toys, food and financial assistance through the Needy Family Fund.
The annual holiday program assists financially struggling families and helps make the Christmas season a little brighter.
“It amazes me how people are so caring. It makes a big difference for us to have programs like this,” said Robinson, who will be looking for gifts for her children, ages 8 and 5.
They’re already excited about the holiday and her older child has been asking for expensive technology, adding a bit to Robinson’s stress.
“They wouldn’t know about it if all the ads weren’t out already,” she said.
The Needy Family Fund, sponsored by The Daily Item, Sunbury Broadcasting Corp. and Susquehanna Bank, raises money during the holidays to aid the Valley’s less fortunate. It is administered by Salvation Army citadels in Sunbury and Milton. Donations can also be left with Susquehanna Bank offices in Sunbury, Selinsgrove, Milton, Lewisburg, Shamokin West, Shamokin East, Kulpmont, Mount Carmel and Pillow.
This year’s goal is $75,000.
