51 Dalmatia area cats ready for new homes

Adoption rates reduced for ‘white sale’ of 25 white felines

By Brett R. Crossley

MONTROSE — Fifty-one cats seized from an apartment near Dalmatia are ready for adoption at a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter in Susquehanna County.

The animals, which were rescued July 30, were taken to the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Montrose facility, where they received veterinary care and vaccinations.

When SPCA representatives removed the animals from the southern Northumberland County home, the chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania SPCA described the animals’ living conditions as terrible.

However, this week, the organization said it has no plans to file charges against the cats’ owner, David Peterson.

Peterson willingly relinquished the animals and said he had been trying to find a humane way to get rid of the cats before the SPCA was called in by local police.

As 25 of the cats are white, the SPCA is extending a “white sale” to make adoption of these felines more affordable. The regular price of $90 for kittens has been reduced to $75; and the cost of adult adoptions has been reduced to $50 from $75. The price of adoption includes spaying or neutering, microchipping and the first round of shots.

The Montrose adoption center is at Routes 706 and 29. The facility is open seven days a week starting at 11:30 a.m. To inquire about adoptions, call 278-1228.

The SPCA also is asking the public for help in funding the costs associated with saving the lives of these cats and victims of cruelty. Donations may be made at www.pspca.org/donate/funds or by calling the Pennsylvania SPCA at (215) 426-6300.
