SELINSGROVE — State Police on Wednesday charged a driver involved in a fatal accident last month, with driving under the influence and reckless driving.
Jason M. Blair, 34, of Port Trevorton, was killed in a crash at 7:30 p.m. July 9 on Route 35, when a Nissan pickup truck driven by James E. Mottern, 42, of Selinsgrove, clipped Blair’s Suzuki motorcycle, sending the bike out of control and into a nearby field. Blair was ejected from the motorcycle and tumbled onto the pavement.
Police said Mottern was in the southbound lane when he initiated a passing movement in an attempt to pass a slower moving vehicle in front of him. Blair saw the movement as he was traveling south in the northbound lane within a properly posted passing zone, and applied his brakes, making his bike skid. Mottern’s vehicle then traveled from the southbound lane into the northbound lane, striking the ride side of Blair’s bike, which then struck an embankment and ejected Blair.
Mottern and his passenger, Janice Mottern, 50, of Selinsgrove, were not injured. They were both wearing seat belts.
Charges of driving under the influence, reckless and careless driving, and overtaking a vehicle on the left, were filed against Mottern by state police at the office of District Justice John T. Robinson in Selinsgrove.
Investigating officer Trooper Rodney Shoeman Jr. said he could not share details of the charges, such as Mottern’s blood alcohol content.
District Attorney Michael Sholley said he could not comment on the details of the charges until the district justice had a chance to review them. Robinson was not in his office on Wednesday.
