HARRISBURG — A McAlisterville man already charged by state police with robbing two banks in Juniata County and one in Snyder County of more than $20,000 has been indicted by a federal grand jury.
The indictment returned Wednesday in Harrisburg against Richard Lockett, 38, charges him with robbing First National Bank in Thompsontown on Oct. 22, Juniata Valley Bank in Port Royal on Oct. 27 and Swineford National Bank in Beaver Springs on Nov. 5.
Not included in the indictment are allegations Lockett attempted to rob the Mifflin County Savings Bank in McClure earlier on Nov. 5, but found the doors were locked, along with theft and receiving stolen property counts involving a truck.
It is customary for state charges to be withdrawn when a suspect is indicted on federal charges.
Lockett has been in jail since Nov. 16, when he was arrested as a probation violator. He was arraigned three days later on the state police charges and committed to jail in lieu of $300,000 bail.
State police had consolidated charges related to the robbery and attempted robbery of the Snyder County banks with those in Juniata County.
An anonymous tip from a family member led state police at Juniata to Lockett. He allegedly stole $6,058 from First National Bank, $6,926 during the robbery at Juniata Valley Bank and $8,660 from Swineford National Bank.
The caller said Lockett admitted spending $1,000 a day on drugs, bragged about stealing cars and said he was getting the money to support his drug use through illegal means. Lockett allegedly also bragged about having a gun, but said he wasn’t hurting anyone, court records said.
Under questioning, Lockett confessed to robbing the three banks and stealing the Ford Escort used in the one crime. He said he committed the crimes to support his drug habit and because he suffers from mental illness, court records said.
