Father threw baby 6 times, police report

MILTON — Police have charged a 20-year-old Milton woman with endangering the welfare of her child for failing to call authorities after the father of her infant son assaulted the child.

Rasheen Eleby, 23, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Robert Bolton; he is incarcerated at Snyder County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Eleby faces 18 charges, including child endangerment, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, in connection with alleged abuse of his son, beginning when the child was 2 months old, according to Milton police.

A criminal complaint was filed Wednesday against Kristi Bender, 20, charging her with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, for not reporting the abuse to authorities. Milton police Cpl. Daniel Embeck filed the charge with Bolton’s office.

According to the criminal complaint, Bender is now at Northumberland County Prison. No information regarding arraignment or bail was available.

Authorities responded to the couple’s Milton home June 30 following a call described as a child fall victim. Eleby and Bender told authorities the baby had fallen from Eleby’s lap to the floor, Milton police said.

Eleby’s admission came July 1 after Northumberland County Children and Youth Services reported to Milton police there was evidence the child had suffered injuries that did not match the parents’ account.

Dr. Paul J. Bellino examined the baby and determined his injuries, including brain trauma and a broken shoulder blade, were more consistent with abuse and not a fall.

On July 1, Eleby allegedly told officers that on June 26, he became angry with the child because he would not stop crying, picking up the baby from a portable crib and throwing him about four feet onto a bed.

Under questioning by Milton police and a state police trooper on July 5, Eleby allegedly told them he’d thrown the baby about six times, beginning when the infant was 2 months old. He said he had thrown the baby onto a couch and once dropped the child onto a “bouncy chair” and the baby landed on his head.

Milton police said Bender and Eleby moved to Milton 10 days before they received the initial report of child abuse. Before that, they had lived in Point Township and much of the alleged abuse reportedly took place at their 1280 Queen St. home in Northumberland.
