SUNBURY —
Two Northumberland County employees were laid off in the past week and three more positions are on the chopping block as the commissioners continue to pare a projected $1.8 million deficit.
There wasn’t much fanfare surrounding the termination of maintenance director Bruce Campbell and a secretary in the engineering office, for personal reasons.
That won’t likely be the case Tuesday afternoon when the salary board meets to vote on proposal to reduce the $71.67 million 2012 budget by about $116,000 eliminating a sheriff’s deputy, a clerk in the prothonotary’s office’s and a secretary in the district attorney’s office.
Commissioners Vinny Clausi, a Democrat, and Stephen Bridy, an Independent, say cuts are necessary to reduce the deficit and avoid higher taxes.
Republican board chairman Rick Shoch said he doesn’t agree with additional reductions in the offices of Sheriff Chad Reiner, Prothonotary Kathleen Strausser and District Attorney Anthony Rosini.
