MOUNT CARMEL — Rescue divers from Sunbury, Schuylkill Haven and Mahanoy City, searching Saturday night for a body, reportedly trapped in a vehicle underwater in a local stripping pit, instead recovered a submerged statue of Santa Claus wearing scuba gear.
A family, rafting on the water of the pit, also known as “Commissioner’s Lake,” had phoned 911 about 8:30 p.m. after seeing a vehicle roll down an embankment and sink underwater.
Fire and rescue responders searched the lake for two hours before finding the statue.
