Shamokin area woman killed while helping at car fire scene

LOCUST GAP — Police say a Shamokin area woman was struck and killed by a vehicle late Wednesday evening while trying to warn traffic about a car fire in Mount Carmel Township.

The victim was identified today as Wanda Wissinger, 34, of Shamokin RR1.

Mount Carmel Police said Wissinger and her husband, Dennis, had stopped to help at the scene of the car fire at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Routes 901 and 54.

Mrs. Wissinger was standing in the road trying to get the attention of other drivers to slow down because of the nearby vehicle fire.

She was standing near the double yellow line, police said, when a westbound vehicle operated by Jennifer Brady, 41, of Ferry Street, Danville, stuck the victim. Police said the driver did not see the victim.

Mrs. Wissinger was pronounced dead at the scene by the Northumberland County coroner. Police said their investigation will continue.

Route 901 was closed for more than three hours as police investigated the death. Assisting at the scene were police from Mount Carmel Township, Mount Carmel borough and Ashland.
